An RN can perform professional nursing functions within Florida scope and may administer medications and treatments prescribed or authorized by a practitioner legally authorized to prescribe them. An RN license does not independently authorize prescribing or the individualized medical treatment decisions reserved to the prescriber. Use the RN for nursing — not as a substitute prescriber.
Nursing assessment, patient education, medication administration under an appropriate order, monitoring, documentation, and escalation according to the clinic workflow.
Medical diagnosis, prescribing, changing a prescription, individualized treatment decisions outside the authorized workflow, and any decision requiring prescriptive authority — physician, authorized APRN, or delegated PA.
“The nurse knows what to do” creates operational ambiguity. A good governance structure defines exactly when the RN proceeds, holds, contacts the APP, contacts the physician, or redirects the patient for further evaluation. Detailed standing orders come later, in the clinical-implementation phase.
